Effect and possible mechanisms of metformin as adjuvant therapy in the management of tuberculosis: A prospective study

ObjectiveTuberculosis (TB) is a deadly infectious ailment causing mortality and morbidity globally. The study objectives were to investigate the effect possible mechanisms of metformin as adjuvant therapy in management tuberculosis.MethodsTB patients attending HAHC hospital, New Delhi (India) had T2DM (Type-2 diabetes mellitus) comorbidity enrolled. Study participants categorized into non-users users depending on presence their prescription. Whole blood was used for immunophenotyping total T-Cells (CD45+CD3+), Helper (Th) (CD45+CD3+ CD4+) Cytotoxic T Cells (Tc) (CD45+CD3+CD8+) through flow cytometry. BD FACS Verse LSR II sample acquisition.ResultsEstimation levels at 2nd visit showed larger (CD45+CD3+) (p < 0.001), = 0.004) 0.001) comparison with non users. use significant conversion sputum smear 0.0318, unpaired t-test) non-users.ConclusionMetformin has potential develop long-term immunity against TB infection responsible its protective impact + comorbid patients. Metformin improved cells, cells cytotoxic it can be prescribed an antitubercular medication unless contraindicated.
